A redevelopment program — also known as “Cemetery Renewal” — is ongoing at Karrakatta, Western Australia’s largest cemetery. The Metropolitan Cemeteries Board (MCB) is the government agency responsible. For more information about the process, please visit our home page.

To date, 48 sections have been redeveloped with at least 31 more slated to be reclaimed in the future. However, a credible source close to the MCB tells us that as many as 206 sections COULD ultimately be redeveloped — representing nearly 83% of all sections at Karrakatta.

As of February 2026, the following sections are facing imminent clearance: Anglican FA, Anglican IA, General AA, Wesleyan DA and Wesleyan EC. More information about these redevelopment plans, including how to make submissions to retain graves, is available here.

It is crucial that you lodge your contact details and request specific information for all family graves. The MCB is responsible for all public cemeteries in Perth, including Karrakatta, Fremantle, Pinnaroo, Guildford, Midland, Rockingham and Gnangara Aboriginal Cemetery. The MCB can be contacted by:

It is strongly recommended that you get all communications in writing. If you have loved ones buried in cemeteries outside of Perth, please get in contact with their management, which is usually the local council.

List of affected areas at Karrakatta Cemetery

We have prepared the following list in a good faith attempt to help inform the public, based on our own research. However, please note that this is NOT an official list and that we cannot guarantee its accuracy or take responsibility for any issues that may arise.

Definitions

The section status meanings are as follows:

  • Redeveloped — this section has already been redeveloped
  • Planned — the MCB has publicly confirmed that this section will be redeveloped (but not exactly when)
  • Suitable — the MCB has privately earmarked this section as “suitable” for redevelopment, but has not publicly confirmed it (according to our source).

The year is when the headstones were REMOVED — not when the burials took place.

The new section name is what the MCB has renamed the section after redevelopment.

NOTE: Mausoleums have been built over graves in Roman Catholic (RC) sections FA, IA and JA. Sections RC HA, KA, LC, MC and SC are planned for future mausoleums. The mausoleum in RC JA is currently being expanded, and the redevelopment of RC EA is also planned for expansion.
