In Reply to MCB: Plans for Redevelopment at Fremantle Cemetery

On March 8, 2024, we revealed that the Metropolitan Cemeteries Board (MCB) is planning to redevelop existing burial areas of Fremantle Cemetery under its “Cemetery Renewal” program — to read our statement, click here.

This evening (April 8, 2024), the MCB made the following post on its Facebook page:

Clearly, the MCB is accusing our group of sharing incorrect information. We completely reject the MCB’s accusation and stand by our original post.

We can confirm that our information comes from very reliable sources — the MCB’s own documents!

Our group has obtained copies of the MCB’s Strategic Asset Plans from 2022, 2023 and 2024. Each document indicates that, as part of its “medium-to-long term asset investment plan”, the MCB intends to “renew burial land in Fremantle” within the next five-to-ten years.

Extracts from MCB Strategic Asset Plans.

If the MCB does not intend to redevelop Fremantle Cemetery, then WHY do three separate documents say otherwise?

We now ask the MCB to:

  1. Apologise for falsely accusing our group of spreading misinformation;
  2. Correct its documentation; and
  3. Issue a full and factually correct public statement.
